LET'S TALK PODCAST PREPARATION
For any podcast, interview, or speaker collaboration, I ask that we have a 15-30 minute chat at least 7 days prior to recording. I'm keen to understand your audience, your goals, and ensure we are both value-aligned. While no two people are the same, broadly speaking, the stressors a hands-full toddler-mum faces are quite different to that of a first-year uni-student. If I understand your audience, chances are there will be tailored advice I can provide or relatable patient examples I can bring to the table from my years of GP consulting.
Let’s run through non-negotiable expectations:
MEDICAL ADVICE:
I’m a medical doctor governed by AHPRA (Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency), and subsequently there are a few boundaries we need to set, with good reason. Firstly, I will not be providing anyone with personalised medical advice. This isn’t because I don’t want to share my knowledge but because medical management is tailored to a person, not a condition. As a clinician, I only provide medical advice to a patient after completing a comprehensive medical history, examination, and ordering any relevant investigations. I’m assuming we’re not quite set up for that.
Any advice provided will be of a general nature. I can guarantee you will hear me harp on about the importance of everyone connecting with an amazing GP so they can get individualised care specific to their unique circumstances and needs.
CONFIDENTIALITY:
I will not be disclosing anyone’s medical history or any identifying information about my patients. It’s important that we be respectful of everyone’s right to privacy. I know it’s common sense, but especially when talking mental health, it’s really important this be considered by everyone. It might be relatable to your audience to discuss your partner's mental health struggles, but if you haven’t obtained explicit consent, please don’t. You are, of course, welcome to open up about your own experiences, but again, your health is your health, it’s no one’s business - only you decide what you’d like to share.
PROFESSIONALISM:
There’s a reason you don’t know intimate details about your GP's kids, their dating history, or their personal health. As medical professionals, we are here to look after our patients, it’s about them, not us. This keeps focus on the person sitting across from us and ensures time is spent helping them resolve their concerns. I am, of course, more than happy to share a bit about my background, why I love general practice and the things I do to look after my own mental health like taking my beautiful Labrador, Snickers, for walks. I may, at times, choose to share a small personal anecdote to build rapport, but I will not be answering any personal questions outside my role as a GP and would thus appreciate if we keep questions focused on bringing value to your audience.
SAFETY:
It’s very important we look out for your audience and appreciate that discussing mental health may lead to someone wanting to reach out for help. I strongly feel that it’s our responsibility to ensure the provision of easy access to those support resources. I would appreciate acknowledgement of this at the end of the podcast and in the show notes. The Cloud GP has created a Mental Health Support Directory which you can share in the show notes should you choose to. (Resources - The Cloud GP Support Directory)
RECORDING, MARKETING, AND ALL THE OTHER STUFF:
At some point during the podcast, I would appreciate the opportunity to discuss The Cloud GP and provide your audience with details of our signature course First Steps to Overcoming Depression and Anxiety - an online, GP-led, self-directed mental health program that helps patients overcome symptoms of depression and anxiety while they wait to see a psychologist. We're dealing with an under-resourced mental health system in Australia. Wait times to obtain support are often several weeks, if not months. Our program helps patients get the ball rolling. We're here to help them make evidence-based lifestyle changes and learn practical psychological skills so they can start to feel better ASAP. I’d appreciate a hyperlink to our website and free resources in the episode show notes.
At the time of our pre-recording meeting, I would love to get a ball-park idea of when the podcast will be released so I can promote it through my own social media. For any social media posts you make about our episode, I would appreciate a tag @thecloudgp if on Instagram or a link to www.thecloudgp.com.au for any other channels. I will provide you with a headshot and bio for you to include in posts/newsletters. I will be happy to share a social media post about our collaboration on my social media featuring your podcast cover if you could kindly send it my way.
And finally, when I’m at home, I'm a trackie daks and top bun kind of gal… if you would like to record and utilise video, can you please let me know in advance so I can look half decent. That’s all, if you have any further questions or clarifications, I would be more than happy to answer them. Have a lovely day, I look forward to chatting soon.
